Week 9 Recap: San Diego Stuns Seattle as Playoff Race Tightens

Colorado Alpenglow rolled past Utah Wild to stay on track for Championship Weekend qualification, while Bay Area Falcons kept their postseason hopes firmly in their hands after taking down Los Angeles Astra. San Diego Super Bloom had a huge road win over Seattle Tempest — a result that cracked the top of the standings wide open heading into the final stretch.

And now comes Week 10, where everything could change again. Seattle Tempest, San Diego Super Bloom, Colorado Alpenglow, and Bay Area Falcons all enter the weekend with potential paths to Championship Weekend qualification, while Oregon Soar and Arizona Sidewinders are fighting to keep their seasons alive. By the end of Saturday night, the entire Championship Weekend field could be locked in — or the playoff race could get even messier.

Game 1: UT @ CO

Alpenglow Pulls Away Early, Stays in Control Against Wild

Colorado Alpenglow looked every bit like a team preparing for Championship Weekend on Saturday, using relentless defense and efficient deep offense to roll past the Utah Wild 22-10.

The game opened with chaos. Utah and Colorado traded layout blocks, long possessions, and missed hucks through the first few points before the Alpenglow finally settled in and started cashing in break chances. Once they found rhythm, the game tilted quickly.

Colorado’s stars were everywhere. Rose Bransford exploded for six goals and 256 receiving yards, consistently finding space behind the Utah defense and finishing possessions cleanly. Kennedy McCarthy added five goals of their own, including multiple highlight-reel grabs in traffic that helped Colorado build separation early.

Handler Ari Nelson controlled the pace all afternoon, piling up 461 throwing yards and five assists while calmly dissecting Utah’s defensive looks. The Alpenglow handler core repeatedly punished short fields created by defensive pressure.

Sarah Itoh and Blaise Sevier each recorded three blocks as Colorado’s defense constantly disrupted Utah’s reset system and deep timing. The Wild flashed moments of offensive creativity — especially through Lily Terpstra’s four assists and handler movement from Eva Bell— but struggled to sustain momentum once Colorado’s break train started rolling.

By the second half, the Alpenglow were fully in control, stretching the lead with quick-strike offense and suffocating defensive possessions that kept Utah chasing the game.

With the win, Colorado strengthened its postseason positioning heading into a massive Week 10 slate.

Game 2: LA @ BAY

Falcons Handle Business Against Astra

Falcons pulled away in the second quarter to defeat Los Angeles Astra 20-13, leaning on defensive pressure and a balanced offensive attack to secure an important win.

Los Angeles kept things tight early behind strong play from Chip Yen, who finished with five assists and 273 receiving yards while repeatedly generating movement for Astra’s offense. Karli Steiner also kept the offense flowing with 291 throwing yards as Los Angeles tried to keep pace in transition moments.

But Bay Area’s defense gradually took over the game.

Lily Steponaitis was everywhere defensively, recording four blocks and disrupting multiple Los Angeles possessions with aggressive poaching and lane pressure. Malina Wiebe led the offensive charge with five goals and 232 receiving yards, consistently punishing deep space and finishing fast-break opportunities. Bridget Wipfler added four goals as Bay Area’s cutter unit repeatedly stretched the field and forced Astra into uncomfortable defensive matchups.

Falcons found another gear coming out of the half, stringing together runs that slowly pushed the margin out of reach.

The win keeps Bay Area firmly in the Championship Weekend race heading into a pivotal Week 10 matchup with Arizona.

Game 3: SD @ SEA

San Diego Earns Statement Win Against San Diego

Super Bloom marched into Seattle and handed Seattle Tempest a 20-16 loss in one of the biggest statement wins of the 2026 season.

The matchup carried Championship Weekend intensity from the opening pull. Seattle Tempest generated plenty of offense early behind Cheryl Hsu’s massive 504 throwing yards and the cutting duo of Jamie Kauffman and Meg Manning, who repeatedly found space underneath and deep. Manning finished with four goals while Kauffman racked up 340 receiving yards in a huge offensive workload.

Super Bloom absorbed Seattle’s early pressure and slowly tightened control of the game through disciplined offense and efficient conversion rate. Megan Maxfield (4G, 2B 237Y) led the scoring attack) while Kaitlyn Weaver (4A 2B 393Y) orchestrated the offense with steady handler movement that consistently neutralized Seattle’s defensive pressure.

Super Bloom capitalized on key breaks, extended possessions when they needed to, and forced Seattle Tempest into increasingly difficult defensive stands as the clock wound down.

Instead of a potential Seattle clinching weekend, the Northwest race remains wide open heading into Week 10 — and San Diego Super Bloom suddenly looks every bit a team nobody wants to face in June.
