Colorado Alpenglow to Pause WUL Competition for 2027 Season

The Western Ultimate League (WUL) and Colorado Alpenglow announced today that Alpenglow will pause operations and withdraw from league play for the 2027 season as they evaluate opportunities to strengthen long-term financial and organizational sustainability.

Organization to explore new pathways for long-term sustainability while continuing its commitment to growing women’s ultimate in Colorado

October 20, 2026 — The Western Ultimate League (WUL) and Colorado Alpenglow announced today that Alpenglow will pause operations and withdraw from league play for the 2027 season as they evaluate opportunities to strengthen long-term financial and organizational sustainability.

While Colorado Alpenglow will not compete in the upcoming WUL season, the organization remains committed to its mission of expanding opportunities for women and non-binary athletes and building a strong ultimate community in Colorado.

"This was a tough decision, and we believe taking the time to evaluate our structure and resources is necessary for the future of Alpenglow," said Betsy Basch, Co-Founder & Manager. “We’re incredibly proud of the community we've built, the athletes who have represented Colorado, and the support we've received along the way. Our passion for this sport hasn't changed. This pause will allow us to explore new opportunities, strengthen our foundation, and find a sustainable path forward."

The WUL remains supportive of Colorado Alpenglow and recognizes the significant contributions the organization has made to the league and the broader ultimate community.

"Colorado Alpenglow has been an important part of the growth of the WUL, bringing incredible talent, energy, and community to our league," said Will Griffin, Executive Director of the Western Ultimate League. "While we're disappointed that they won't be competing in 2027, we respect their decision to prioritize long-term sustainability. Building professional opportunities for women and non-binary athletes requires more than passion and dedication. It requires meaningful, sustained financial investment. The talent is here, the audience is growing, and the potential is enormous. Now it's about ensuring the resources and support are there to match."

As women's professional sports continue to gain momentum worldwide, the need for investment at every level remains critical. From sponsorships and community partnerships to individual contributions and institutional support, sustainable growth depends on organizations, businesses, and fans recognizing the value of financially investing in athletes and the opportunities they deserve.

The WUL encourages its community to continue supporting and volunteering with local teams, attending games, and investing in the organizations creating pathways for the next generation of athletes. Every partnership, ticket purchase, and contribution helps build a stronger future for the sport.

United in Ultimate. Unwavering in Inclusion.

All-Star Inclusion Statement

The Ultimate Frisbee Association, Western Ultimate League, and the Premier Ultimate League will come together again for an annual multi-league-wide weekend August 27-28, 2026, in Madison, WI. The UFA will host its championship games, and the WUL and PUL will face off in the second Annual WUL vs PUL All-Star Game. As our communities come together to celebrate our sport, we also recognize the importance of standing together for the people who make it stronger.

The executive order and new Supreme Court decision barring transgender women and girls from participating in sports has left our friends and teammates once again targeted by legislation created to drive discriminatory and hateful policies that weaponize harmful stereotypes in an attempt to erase transgender athletes from these spaces.

The PUL, WUL, UFA and MUFA (Madison Ultimate Frisbee Association) categorically reject these attempts to drive a wedge through our communities and the hurtful effort to remove opportunities from people that deserve them as much as anyone.

Our organizations remain proudly committed to maintaining a safe, inclusive, and affirming environment for athletes of all gender expressions. Sport is an essential part of people's lives. It provides a physical, mental, and emotional outlet and can offer camaraderie in a time when many find themselves increasingly isolated.

Our organizations believe in empowering all of our players to safely participate as their authentic selves.

The PUL and WUL remain firm in their gender inclusion policies, and this statement has represented our leagues in the past and will remain our commitment going forward. MUFA’s full gender inclusion policy can be found here.

MUFA is proud to have fostered a community where people across all spectrums can play and thrive as their best selves, and they commit to continuing to work to make their community a better place for those from marginalized backgrounds through their policies and actions. In the face of a wave of discrimination and hate, they work tirelessly to reinforce MUFA as a community for all.

The leadership of the three leagues and MUFA stand behind these statements, and we would like to share some resources to engage with to raise awareness and to deepen understanding of the issues facing transgender people.
