Organization to explore new pathways for long-term sustainability while continuing its commitment to growing women’s ultimate in Colorado
October 20, 2026 — The Western Ultimate League (WUL) and Colorado Alpenglow announced today that Alpenglow will pause operations and withdraw from league play for the 2027 season as they evaluate opportunities to strengthen long-term financial and organizational sustainability.
While Colorado Alpenglow will not compete in the upcoming WUL season, the organization remains committed to its mission of expanding opportunities for women and non-binary athletes and building a strong ultimate community in Colorado.
"This was a tough decision, and we believe taking the time to evaluate our structure and resources is necessary for the future of Alpenglow," said Betsy Basch, Co-Founder & Manager. “We’re incredibly proud of the community we've built, the athletes who have represented Colorado, and the support we've received along the way. Our passion for this sport hasn't changed. This pause will allow us to explore new opportunities, strengthen our foundation, and find a sustainable path forward."
The WUL remains supportive of Colorado Alpenglow and recognizes the significant contributions the organization has made to the league and the broader ultimate community.
"Colorado Alpenglow has been an important part of the growth of the WUL, bringing incredible talent, energy, and community to our league," said Will Griffin, Executive Director of the Western Ultimate League. "While we're disappointed that they won't be competing in 2027, we respect their decision to prioritize long-term sustainability. Building professional opportunities for women and non-binary athletes requires more than passion and dedication. It requires meaningful, sustained financial investment. The talent is here, the audience is growing, and the potential is enormous. Now it's about ensuring the resources and support are there to match."
As women's professional sports continue to gain momentum worldwide, the need for investment at every level remains critical. From sponsorships and community partnerships to individual contributions and institutional support, sustainable growth depends on organizations, businesses, and fans recognizing the value of financially investing in athletes and the opportunities they deserve.
The WUL encourages its community to continue supporting and volunteering with local teams, attending games, and investing in the organizations creating pathways for the next generation of athletes. Every partnership, ticket purchase, and contribution helps build a stronger future for the sport.
